Why do some people get more diggs than others

Why do some people get more diggs than others? Beats me. I'm not talking about 1 or 2 diggs more, it's more like 100 or 200 times more.

This morning, I saw Search this cool site for the best, most comfy seat on a plane on my google homepage, so I thought, I know seatguru, and it's pretty good, is there something better than seatguru. So out of curiosity, I opened it up and here is what I saw:

Search this cool site for the best, most comfy seat on a plane

Yes nerds. or semi-nerds it's SeatGuru!!!!. Who hoo, you travelers rejoice to quote them "The ultimate source for airplane seating, in-flight amenities and airline information." Kinda cool if you travel alot like me!

I posted an article on digg not long ago about seatguru, well 23 days to be exact as of today. When I posted it, there was a few articles about seatguru already, and it wasn't the first time I heard of seatguru (the first time was on a newspaper), but I thought I will post it anyway, it might be useful to someone. I wasn't expecting many diggs, as I was a pretty new digg user and seatguru wasn't new news.

As you can probably see if you clicked on my digg entry I got 0 diggs, the 1 digg was an automatic digg when I submitted the article. The other article, got 335 diggs as of writing, you may have dugg it yourself. I vaguely remember none of the other seatguru links got many diggs, so I did a search on seatguru, and I was right, none of the other seatguru articles got more than 15 diggs.

So what makes this entry special? What are people digging these days? My first thought was, this entry only had a catchy title, and two short sentences about the website, is that the reason why people dugg it? Then I clicked on the person's profile, and it seems this guy is a professional digg user. He posts up 3 or 4 digg entries every hour, and has 1537 pages of posts, of which 16 made it to the homepage. I quickly checked the most recent articles that made it to the homepage, and they are of similar style - a catchy title, two or three sentences of description or opinion, and linking to the website, by website, I don't mean link to an article reviewing the website, it's things like www.seatguru.com, the actual website.

So it seems, it doesn't require long good blog reviews or articles for people to digg it. Perhaps that is even less desirable, although I enjoy reading good reviews, especially from experienced professionals. Perhaps in today's busy world, people prefer to just hear about a website, have a quick look, and think "yep, it's good" then digg it. Maybe this guy has the trick to getting digged, and he is doing a good thing by sharing good websites.

So here's my opinion. People may not have time to read long articles, so they skip those ones and those don't get digged, unless they are really good. These people visit a website, maybe take a first impression of the homepage and think "cool", then recommend it to others by digging it. Pretty clever I think, and I don't object to that, some of those websites are really worthwhile visiting, but is this what digg started out to be? I myself come to digg for articles that have been read and recommended by others, but then I do find myself not having enough time to go through the articles at times. So maybe digg has evolved to adapt to today's busy world, for better or for worse.

Lastly, random comment: seems digg is still not big enough for blogger to know it is a "word", "digg " was used 15 times in this article, and they were picked as spelling mistakes.

  • Good article. I personally would prefer the long good blog style to a quick Digg, although I can see the attraction there, too.

  • Very interesting. You should feel good because I googled how to get more diggs and this came up right away. I'm sure a lot of people are wondering. I will also say that any article I read on that particular subject matter will not be able to simplify it as you have. I think there is a lot of truth in what you just said, because most of us don't want to take the time to read a complete article. Thank you for your insight!
